Portuguese is the official language of Portugal. While many people in Lisbon, Porto and tourist areas speak English, learning Portuguese will significantly enhance your experience, improve job prospects and help you integrate. There are differences between European Portuguese and the Brazilian Portuguese you might encounter online; focus on European pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.
The Portuguese government offers free courses for migrants through the Português para Todos programme. These Host Language (PLA) courses are available at public schools, vocational training centres (EFP) and Qualifica centres and provide certification from A1 to B2 level. The programmes are open to foreigners aged 16+ with a residence permit and integrate language learning with civics and cultural orientation. An online platform (PPT Online) offers courses in multiple languages. Register through your local Centro Qualifica or municipal adult education centre.
Private language schools and tutors offer flexible schedules and smaller classes, costing €10–€20 per hour for group lessons and €25–€40 per hour for private instruction. Universities and cultural institutes also run intensive summer courses. Several apps (Duolingo, Memrise, Busuu) include European Portuguese modules. Community language exchanges, such as Tandem meet‑ups and Meetup groups, provide informal practice and social opportunities. Immersion—watching Portuguese TV, reading news and speaking with locals—will accelerate your learning.
Learning the language helps navigate bureaucracy (banking, healthcare, taxes) and makes everyday interactions easier. It also demonstrates respect for your new community and fosters deeper connections. Even basic phrases (bom dia, obrigado/a, desculpe) can make a positive impression. If you’re trans or non‑binary, inform close contacts of your pronouns and gender terms in Portuguese (for example, using elu as a non‑binary pronoun). Language evolves, and younger Portuguese people increasingly adopt gender‑neutral language.
